Dear Cub Scout Leader:
Hope everyone is having a glorious spring!!! All the redbuds and daffodils and
tulips and dogwoods are really showing off—I absolutely love this time of
year!!!
As usual, the District Pinewood Derby was a huge success!!! Thanks to Pack 616
for their (as always!) very well-organized and well-attended event. Fifty one
Cub Scouts showed up from all over the district to compete in this fast-paced
race!!! Winners are listed on our Unaka District Website, with 1st Place Overall
going to Colby Bowers, Bear; 2nd place overall to Josh Futrell, Webelo, and 3rd
place overall to Landen Frerichs, Wolf. Congratulations to all participants and
winners!!
In addition to the derby, another fantastic event that just passed is our
Spring Family Camp. Gary Imlay and Pack 615 provided about 55 boys and their
families with a wonderful weekend of Scouting activities at Gee Creek
Campground. Thanks to Gary for all his hard work, and to all adults who
participated as well!!!
Our April event will be our second-ever DISTRICT CROSSOVER CEREMONY on Saturday,
April 16th, starting at 7:30 p.m. in Calhoun. All qualifying 2nd year Webelos,
their families, and leaders should plan to attend, but you need to let our Phil
Seibert know of those plans. This is an event that must be coordinated with the
Order of the Arrow members, the leaders of the troops the Webelos are crossing
over into, as well as leaders of their current Pack. Participants will meet at
Calhoun Methodist Church between 7:00 and 7:15, and drive as a group to the
site. Spectators are welcomed and everyone is advised to bring lawn chairs to
sit in.
This has become an annual tradition, much like the Tap-Out Ceremony. I hope
qualifying Cub Scouts will participate!!
Our May event is a new one, a FISHING DERBY at
Athens Regional Park, on Saturday May 7th (PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF
DATE!!!), starting at 8:00 a.m. Cub Scout Pack 614 is in charge of this event,
which is being held in conjunction with Athens City’s annual Fishing Rodeo. All
children under 12 may fish for free, so get your Cub Scouts with their rods and
reels and head to Regional Park for a fun morning!!! Please note that Cub Scouts
will be out there fishing with the public……. The City of Athens awards prizes
for certain tagged fish that are caught that day, but Scott Walker, Cubmaster of
Pack 614, says he will have some extra prizes just for Cub Scouts.
In addition to the Fishing Derby, Pack 614 is planning to have a Pancake
Breakfast right there at the Pavilion near the lake. The breakfast will run at
the same time as the Fishing Derby, from 8:00 – 11:00, or until they run out of
pancakes. Come by for a great breakfast of pancakes and drinks for a mere $2.00
a plate.
Scott would like to use this event as a Recruitment tool, and asks all Packs to
help with that by setting up a simple display of their Pack’s
activities/flag/whatever, and an activity for all boys to enjoy. Also, he wants
to have a District Tent set up to recruit leaders and give them information
about upcoming trainings and activities. Talk about taking the tiger by the
tail—thanks Scott for working so hard on I’m sure another great district
event!!! The City of Athens and TWRA would like for this to become an annual
event sponsored by them and the Cub Scouts of Uanka. Sounds like a plan to me!!!
I need to let you know:
- --that our next Roundtable will be Thursday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m. at Mars
Hill Church. Please plan to attend as we go over details of our Fishing Derby
and SURVIVOR TWILIGHT CAMP!!!
- --that E.G. Fisher Library in Athens is having a “Wetland Flower Planting
Day” on Saturday, April 16th, starting at 8:00 a.m. and ending when the job is
completed, about 3:00 p.m. There are 5000 flowers to be planted in the wetland
area beside the library, and they want volunteers—including Cub Scouts!!! You
will need to bring work gloves, small shovels, and/or hand spades; wear
clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy; and bring a sack lunch or
make other lunch plans. Water will be provided. Please know that Cub Scouts
will need to have a waiver signed by his or her parent or guardian; I would
suggest that you have a parent with each Cub Scout for safety reasons.
They ask that everyone park across the street at the Lutheran Church or
Ingleside Pool. Please contact sanitation@cityofathenstn.com or call April at
744-2749 and let them know your plans and find out about the waiver forms; I
would suggest that Cubmasters turn in numbers for their Packs.
If your pack is working on the “Journey to Excellence” award, this would be a
wonderful opportunity to complete a service project!!!
- --that our Unaka District Cub Scout Twilight Camp will be held June 20-24
from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Mayfield Diary Farm north of Athens. The theme
will be "Survivor". Registration forms will be mailed to all registered scouts
from the council office later this month. Cost is $55 for early registration
(before May 16), $60 after May 16 and $70 for walk-ons. We're still looking
for adults to help with the camp, so if you're available, please contact
Christy Seibert, the camp director, at 336-9919 or at her email address
hobbymaker@aol.com
Please know that there are camperships available for needy Scouts from the
council as well as from our district. Cubmasters should decide what boys
receive the forms from the Council. Cubmasters should also submit names to
Christy for consideration for local camperships as soon as possible.
- --that Webelos who will be crossing over to a troop this spring are
eligible for Boy Scout Resident camp in June. If this is the first year in a
Boy Scout troop, they are eligible for a one-time $40 discount on the cost of
summer camp! To get this discount, Scouts should contact their new
Scoutmaster.
Thanks for all your time and efforts this program year! I look forward to
working with you to offer our district Cub Scouts high quality events next
year!! See you at the Crossover Ceremony and Fishing Derby!!!!!!
